With its faithful and enthusiastic audiences, Miami has become a must stop for touring flamenco dancers, singers and musicians. But such an interest cannot be developed and sustained by visiting artists. Founded in 1985 by dancer and choreographer Ilisa Rosal, the Miami-based Ballet Flamenco La Rosa has become a champion of flamenco in South Florida.

If you haven’t experienced flamenco live, the company premieres their latest works on consecutive Saturdays beginning this weekend. “Alma Flamenca” will be presented first, at 8 p.m. June 15 at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. The following weekend, the company will present “Fuerza Flamenca” at 8 p.m. June 22 at the North Beach Bandshell.

The program of “Alma Flamenca” will sample several palos (forms within flamenco) including a martinete and a seguiriya, the always powerful solea and a fin de fiesta (party ending) por bulerias.

“Both evenings will connect with the soul of pure flamenco music and dance. Audiences can expect a breathtaking theater experience full of earthy power, spellbinding movement, subtle nuances and explosive energy,” Rosal says in a written statement. “The summer performances also mark a milestone in Ballet Flamenco La Rosa’s history, as I’m returning to teach our classes after a pause to focus on my health. I can now put myself fully into it, mind, body and soul, and continue our legacy in offering the community a myriad of inspiring programs that energize us and deepen our humanity.”

“Alma Flamenca” will take place at Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, 3385 NE 188th St. Tickets cost $35-$45. Call 877-311-7469 or go to AventuraCenter.org. “Fuerza Flamenca” will take place at North Beach Bandshell, 7275 Collins Ave., in Miami Beach. Tickets cost $30-$40. Call 305-672-5202 or go to NorthBeachBandshell.com.
