Arts Ballet Theatre: rinde tributo a Marius Petipa

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida (ABTF) y su escuela de ballet adjunta, ambas bajo la dirección de Vladimir Issaev, se encuentran por estos días entregadas de lleno a la celebración del bicentenario del nacimiento de Marius Petipa (1818-1910), considerado el Padre del Ballet Ruso y el más influyente Ballet Master y coreógrafo en la historia del ballet.

Así las cosas, ABTF rinde tributo a Petipa con dos programas concierto. El primero se presentó el fin de semana pasado en el teatro Amaturo del Broward Center for the Performing Arts en Fort Lauderdale y se repite este sábado y domingo en el Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. El segundo está programado para fines de abril.

La noche que reseñamos abrió con una serie de momentos extraídos de “La Bella Durmiente”, una de las obras maestras de Petipa con música de Tchaikovsky que fuera estrenada originalmente en 1890 y hoy forma parte del repertorio de numerosas compañías importantes en todo el mundo.

Del primer acto se incluyó el Grand pas d'ensemble (o Pas de six) donde las variaciones fueron ejecutadas con esmero por Hinano Eto, Yingyue Wang, Rieko Hatato, Wendy Guo, Lily Davidson y Janis Liu. Del tercer acto, se presentaron los divertimentos de la Princesa Florine y el Pájaro Azul (a cargo de Yayami Sato y Masanao Ito), al Gato con Botas y la Gata Blanca (Georgina Brinkman y Kevin Zong), a la Caperucita Roja y el Lobo (Saori Morioka y Mesaya Kaneko) y por supuesto, el Grand Pas de Deux de la Princesa Aurora y el Príncipe Deseo que interpretaron de manera espléndida Mary Carmen Catoya y Johnny Almeida. Como siempre, ver bailar a Catoya es sentirse refugiado en un oasis de inefable precisión y belleza.

Después de un breve intermedio, se presentó el montaje de Issaev sobre la “Arlequinada” de Petipa, con música de Riccardo Drigo. El original en dos actos se estrenó en 1900 pero sobrevive en versiones en un acto derivadas de la de Fiodor Lopukhov (1933). Incluso George Balanchine hizo la suya en 1965.

En una de las primeras escenas hay una serenata cantada para Colombina (a la popular melodía original de Drigo se le agregó letra en 1922) y los créditos indican que el pas de deux tiene la coreografía original de Petipa, aunque algunos historiadores sostienen que este es en realidad una creación que armó otro coreógrafo en la década de 1930.

Pero más allá de la cuestionable autoría del pas de deux hay que reseñar que la inclusión de ambas cosas es un acierto y que en su conjunto, la “Arlequinada” de Issaev funciona bastante bien como oferta de entretenimiento aún cuando todavía se sienta dispersa – incluso algo errática - como puesta en escena.

La sinopsis que aparece en el programa de mano nos dice que la historia tiene lugar durante las festividades del Carnaval en Italia y está inspirada en la Commedia dell'arte del siglo XVI.

Cassandro (Kazuya Arima) tiene una hermosa hija, Colombina (Janis Liu), que está enamorada de Arlequín (Kevin Zong). Sin embargo, Cassandro tiene otros planes para Colombina: quiere casarla con el rico Alessandro (Masaya Kaneko) y la mantiene encerrada en la casa para alejarla de Arlequín. Cuando Cassandro asiste a las festividades del Carnaval, deja la llave de su casa al cuidado de Pierrot (Yudai Colaianni). En un momento de distracción, Pierretta (Wendy Guo) toma la llave de Pierrot y permite que Colombina y Arlequín se reúnan.

Los sirvientes de Cassandro (Yasamin Hoghayegh, Masanao Ito, Saori Morioka, Jeisuke Nishikawa, Lily Davidson y Haowei Zhu) lo descubren, se llevan a Arlequín y lo lanzan desde el balcón estrellándolo en el suelo. Aparecen entonces el Hada Buena (Yingyue Wang) y su acompañante (Johnny Almeida) y con la ayuda de millones de arlequines (25 pequeños intérpretes de la Vladimir Issaev’s School of Classical Ballet), le devuelven la vida a Arlequín. Cuando Cassandro regresa y ve lo sucedido, llama inmediatamente al notario (Ari Barbella) para que case a Colombina con Alessandro.

Desesperadamente enamorado, Arlequín llora por ayuda. El Hada Buena y los arlequines hacen desaparecer a Cassandro y Alessandro y confunden al notario que termina casando a Colombina con Arlequín. Al final, la ciudad celebra las festividades y el triunfo del amor.

Se dice que Petipa siempre consideró que la coreografía debería tener prioridad sobre todo lo demás e Issaev parece pensar de igual manera. Todos los bailarines tienen aquí un momento donde pueden mostrar el nivel alcanzado y todos lo aprovechan al máximo pero “Arlequinada” es un triunfo personal para Janis Liu, una comediante encantadora y una ejecutante virtuosa que hace apenas unos día recibió la Medalla de Oro en la primera edición de la Miami International Ballet Competition.

Todas las obras de Petipa fueron superproducciones y reproducirlas requiere dinero. Estos son tiempos difíciles pero con una buena producción la “Arlequinada” de ABTF puede acabar siendo un espectáculo de atractivo familiar quizás tan exitoso como “Cascanueces”.

Mientras tanto, esta versión concierto que el público aplaude con entusiasmo al final es un buen pretexto para ir al teatro y disfrutar de una experiencia donde se honra un legado, se afirma el presente y se promete continuidad al arte del ballet.
